Online Couples Sessions
Couples Sessions in the Privacy, Comfort, and Convenience of Home
Most of us probably imagine counseling sessions taking place in an office with a couch and a chair. But HIPPA compliant video platforms offer the privacy, comfort, and convenience of having sessions from your home or other chosen location.
For couples especially, the convenience of not having to travel to an office, the flexibility of being able to meet even when you are both in different locations, the anonymity of not having to sit in a waiting room, and the privacy and ease of being in a familiar environment as you talk about deeply personal and painful topics can make online sessions preferable to in-office sessions.
The Benefits of Online Sessions
Why Some Clients Prefer Not to Come into The Office
The questions that I’m most often asked when people are curious about the effectiveness of online sessions and how virtual sessions work are:
“Can you actually do couples work online?”
I understand the initial skepticism. If you haven’t had the opportunity to experience online sessions, it may be hard to imagine the inherent benefits of meeting online. But once my clients have participated in online sessions, they frequently express their appreciation for the opportunity to meet in the comfort and privacy of home. For those who dread the thought of running into someone in the waiting room, this is an enormous relief. Clients also love the convenience of not needing to spend time commuting to an office. Finally, by using online sessions, clients aren’t limited to selecting a clinician who is geographically convenient, and instead, they can choose the professional who is the best fit for them.
“What platform do you use? Is it really private and secure?”
For my sessions, I use a secure and private version of Google Meet. All of my client couples get a unique meeting link, so there is no chance that anyone else will virtually “walk-in” to the session. With my version of Google Meet, clients don’t need to download any special applications or software. They don’t need any technological expertise. They don’t even need to have a Google account. The entire process is streamlined and straightforward, making it incredibly easy and efficient for my busy clients.
“Are there issues that don’t work with online sessions?”
For some types of therapy, the answer is most certainly “yes,” but for the work that I do with couples, the answer is “no.” Despite working together on a screen instead of in a room, clients discover that they can communicate and connect with me just as they would sitting in my office.
